What "compostable¹" actually means
“Compostable” means: microorganisms completely break down the material under the right conditions, without leaving any permanent residues. Our capsules are certified for home composting and break down there within a maximum of 24 weeks¹. You therefore do not need an industrial facility with constant temperatures, which many plastics advertised as “biodegradable” require. Most of it is coffee anyway
Around 75 percent of a used capsule consists of coffee grounds. With an aluminum capsule, this content must be laboriously separated before recycling. With ours, it stays where it belongs: in the compost, as a source of nitrogen. In Germany, around eight million coffee capsules are used every day. At this volume, the difference really adds up.
Where do used capsules go?
On your own compost heap or into the garden compost: yes. In the organic waste bin: check your municipality's guidelines first. Many waste disposal companies exclude compostable packaging because their facilities operate with short decomposition times. This is due to the facility technology, not the capsule. Where garden compost is not an option, it belongs in the general waste.
You don't need to remove the coffee grounds for this. That is precisely the difference compared to the aluminum capsule, from which they must be separated before recycling.
Aluminum, plastic, refill capsule — the comparison
Aluminum is easy to recycle, but only if the capsule actually ends up in the correct recycling stream, along with the coffee grounds, which must be separated beforehand. Plastic capsules are lighter and harder for sorting plants to capture. Refillable stainless steel capsules avoid waste entirely, but cost time with every cup and produce inconsistent results. Our answer lies somewhere in between: the convenience of a ready-made capsule, without leaving any metal behind.

Aluminum-free and bio-based
The capsule consists primarily of bio-based raw materials, with a biogenic carbon content of around 96 percent. It contains no aluminum. Consequently, it does not need to be melted down or refilled, and no additional aluminum waste is generated.

Sustainable origin, cultivation and harvesting
All organic coffees from My Coffee Cup are certified organic according to EU standards. The coffee farmers we work with use cultivation and processing methods that protect the soil and the environment, and they comply with the regulations for organic coffee farming. The beans come from countries including Colombia and Guatemala; they are roasted in our own roastery.
The coffee remains the point.
Better packaging is of little use if the contents aren't right. That is why every variety here is organic coffee from controlled cultivation: from our strong espresso and milder lungo to the aroma collection and our decaf. Plus our tea capsules, also in compostable¹ packaging.

Yes. Our capsules are certified for home composting and decompose there within a maximum of 24 weeks¹. This is not the case for every capsule advertised as compostable: Many materials require the sustained heat of an industrial facility and do not fully break down in a garden compost heap.
Industrially compostable packaging requires a facility that maintains high temperatures for an extended period; in a home compost bin, it often only partially decomposes. Home compostable means that decomposition also works at the lower temperatures found in a garden. Our capsules are tested for both methods¹. For those who have neither a compost heap nor a suitable organic waste bin: some municipalities and manufacturers operate their own collection points for coffee capsules, though this varies significantly by region.
Place it in your household or garden compost, where it will decompose within a maximum of 24 weeks¹. It does not belong in the organic waste bin everywhere: many municipalities expressly exclude compostable packaging because their facilities operate with short composting cycles.
