Milk coffee diversity: A cultural journey through different methods of preparation
In many countries around the world, latte has developed its own cultural and taste identity.
In Italy, the country of espresso tradition, the "caffè latte" is celebrated - a harmonious combination of strong espresso and velvety warm milk, often topped with a touch of milk foam. It is only drunk at breakfast. Italians consider it an energizing and at the same time calming way to start the morning and do not see it as a drink for later in the day or evening.
The "café au lait" is quite different in France, where equal parts hot coffee and hot milk blend to create a smooth and soothing coffee experience. Its creamy texture and mild taste make it a relaxing drink that can be enjoyed at any time of the day.
In Finland, a variant of milk coffee has been created that is unusual for us and perhaps at first seems unusual. In the traditional Kaffeost, a strong brewed coffee is poured over a hearty cube of cheese, the Leipäjuusto. The Leipäjuusto is made from cow, sheep or reindeer milk. Although the recipe comes from Swedish Lapland, it is also widespread in Finland.
In the United States, however, the "Café Breve" is very popular. A latte that is prepared with two shots of espresso and a so-called "half-and-half" milk, a combination of whipped cream and whole milk. This gives this latte variant a creamy and rich consistency.
A delicious variation for hot summer months is the "Vietnamese iced coffee", also known as "Cà phê sữa đá". This refreshing creation consists of a strong coffee that is first poured over sweetened condensed milk and then over ice cubes. The resulting latte is deliciously creamy and sweet with an intense taste experience. This type of latte is particularly popular in Vietnam and other countries in the region.
This fascinating and multifaceted variety of latte preparation not only illustrates its universal appreciation, but also how local traditions and preferences shape the essence of this popular beverage around the world.
