Nespresso compatible capsules: Edeka and Rewe

Written by:  Marta Kucera | August 1, 2024 | Reading time  5  min

You are standing in front of the coffee shelf, looking for the capsules you saw online — and you can't find them. This is rarely because they don't exist. It is because of how retail works.

There are three things you should know before buying. Regarding the last one, we’ll tell you something that we don’t like ourselves.

Where to find them

In retail, yes — but not in every store.

Whether they fit

Original yes, Vertuo no. Without exception.

What happens after that

Garden compost yes, organic waste bin usually no.

Availability at leading retailers

A key advantage of My Coffee Cup coffee capsules is their availability in many well-known supermarkets and drugstores. Particularly worth mentioning are Edeka and Rewe, two of the largest supermarket chains in Germany that stock these environmentally friendly products. This presence in
leading retail chains makes it easy for consumers to integrate the compostable organic coffee capsules into their shopping routines. In addition, the capsules are also available at dm, Budni and HIT, which further increases their accessibility.

What you can do if yours doesn't have one

Ask. At the checkout or at customer service. Stores can reorder items if they are listed in the system. When doing so, mention the variety, not just the brand — otherwise, it will take a long time to find.

Remember the name, not the color. What is on the shelf changes throughout the year: seasonal goods arrive, other items are discontinued, packaging is redesigned. The variety name stays the same.

Or you can save yourself the search. All 49 varieties are permanently available in the shop, including those that are rarely found in stores.

Fits Original, not Vertuo

This is the most expensive mix-up on this site, which is why it is at the very top and not in the fine print.

Nespresso®³ sells two systems side-by-side that have nothing to do with each other. Original is the older and more widespread one. Vertuo came later and uses its own capsule format. What fits into one does not fit into the other—and no adapter will change that.

Fits

Essenza, Pixie, CitiZ, Inissia, Lattissima and comparable Original models.

Doesn't fit

Vertuo — a different capsule format. The same applies to the Nespresso®³ Professional system.

Not sure what model you have? The model name is attached to the device, usually on the bottom or back. If it says Vertuo, our capsules are not the right ones—so you can save yourself the order.

Using the original machines remains unchanged: insert, close the lever, done. No adapter, no modifications, no loss of warranty.

Diverse taste experiences

My Coffee Cup offers a wide range of Nespresso compatible coffee capsules that are both tasty and sensorially appealing. Here is an overview
about the different product categories:

  • organic coffee capsules: Grown under fair and sustainable conditions, these capsules offer a balanced and aromatic coffee experience.
  • Aromatic coffee: From intense espressos to mild lungos – there is something for every coffee lover.
  • Sets & Bundles: Ideal for trying different varieties or as a gift for friends and family.
  • special offers: Attractive discounts on selected coffee blends for bargain hunters and connoisseurs.

Garden compost yes, organic waste bin mostly no

Now for the part that advertising likes to leave out. Compostable¹ does not mean “can go anywhere.” It means: The capsule decomposes under certain conditions — and the organic waste bin often does not meet these conditions.

Garden compost

Capsule including contents on top, without opening, without separating. It is tested for this: a maximum of 24 weeks¹.

Organic waste bin

Only if your municipality allows compostable¹ packaging. Many facilities exclude them.

Otherwise residual waste

If there is nothing in the waste ordinance, it belongs there. Annoying, but better than being sorted incorrectly.

The reason is simple: Municipal facilities have shorter cycles than a garden compost heap. What passes through there in a few weeks is not yet decomposed at the end and is sorted out. Two minutes spent reading your municipality's waste regulations will save you the trouble.

On your own compost heap, however, it is less effort than anything else: there is no need for a collection bag under the sink, nor a trip to the return point. Find out more at disposing of coffee capsules.

Espresso and Lungo each have their own roast profile

Both are organic coffee from controlled cultivation, but roasted differently. Anyone who simply runs more water through an espresso capsule will not get a good lungo, but a watery espresso.

Espresso

Short and strong, for the small cup.

Lungo

Milder and with more volume, for a standard cup.

Aroma Collection

Vanilla to gingerbread, without syrup.

Decaf

For the evening, decaffeinated without chemicals.

Single Origins

Coffee from a single origin rather than a blend.

Sample set

Several varieties in small quantities, if you are undecided.

If you usually drink espresso, start with espresso. The rest can be sampled at your leisure — that's what the tasting set is for.
